With the spring season in full swing, there’s no better time to take advantage of the seemingly endless amounts of activities that are located throughout the Greater Richmond area. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast or are simply looking for a fun day out with family and friends, there’s something for everyone to enjoy within this beautiful region. Read on to see a few of our favorite spring activities from our team at Boone Homes.
Outdoor activitiesOne of the best ways to experience the beauty of spring is to visit the many parks and gardens scattered throughout the region, and within the greater Richmond area, you are never in short supply of destinations to discover. The Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is located just a short drive from Hanover and features 50 acres of gardens, with themed gardens including a stunning Cherry Tree Walk, Rose Garden, Asian Valley and a Children’s Garden that burst into bloom each spring. Maymont Park is another popular outdoor destination in Richmond, and it’s easy to see why as it’s home to beautifully landscaped gardens, wildlife exhibits and walking trails that are perfect for a springtime stroll.
The Virginia Capital Trail is a 52-mile trail that runs from Richmond to Jamestown and is perfect for a bike ride in the spring where you can stop along the way and enjoy the sights and sounds of the countryside. Goochland is also home to several great hiking trails to explore, such as the James River Park System and Powhatan State Park. These trails offer stunning views of the surrounding area, and are a great way to get some exercise and fresh air. The James River also offers plenty of opportunities for kayaking and canoeing, and there are several rental companies in the area that offer equipment and guided tours allowing you to easily take in the beauty of the river.
Entertainment opportunities
Spring also begins a busy time for festivals and other entertainment events happening throughout the area, and the Dominion Riverrock in Richfield on May 19-21 isn’t one you’ll want to miss. With a variety of outdoor activities such as yoga classes and trail runs to take part in and live music to enjoy all day long, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The spring season of festivals seamlessly blends into summer with the Ashland Strawberry Faire held in June that features live music, arts and crafts vendors and, of course, plenty of fresh strawberries. Then in July, you can enjoy the Hanover Tomato Festival—another local favorite that celebrates the county’s tomato crop with live music, food vendors and plenty of tomato-based dishes.
This is also the perfect time of year to visit a local farm and enjoy the fresh produce that the season has to offer, and Hanover County in particular is home to several farms that offer tours, pick-your-own options and other fun activities for visitors. Both Ashland Berry Farm and Meadow Event Park are popular destinations for families, with petting zoos, a variety of spring crops to pick and a number of seasonal events to enjoy. Virginia is also known for its wineries, and there are several in the Goochland area including Byrd Cellars, Elk Island Winery and Grayhaven Winery that are perfect for sipping on some delicious local wines and taking in the beautiful scenery of the surrounding vineyards.
