As the school year winds down, the weather warms up and summer quickly approaches, everyone’s schedule can seem to get a bit hectic. Rocketts Red Glare: Start your summer off with a bang at Rocketts Landing on Sunday, May 25. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the fireworks starting at approximately 9 p.m. The show is free and open to the public, and blankets and picnics are welcome.
Sandston American Legion Parade and Festivities: Held Monday, May 26, the parade kicks off at 1 p.m. at Seven Pines Elementary School and proceeds down Williamsburg Road through Sandston. The Grand Marshall of this year’s parade is Michael Robinson, a member of the 2014 Super Bowl-winning Seattle Seahawks team. Robinson will even host a meet and greet immediately after the parade. Attendees can also enjoy live music, food and drinks and entertainment for children.
Historic Cemeteries, Revisited Bus Tour: Spend Memorial Day touring historic 18th and 19th century cemeteries on Richmond’s East End, including St. John’s Church, the African Burial Ground, Woodland Cemetery and many others. Learn about their layout, evolution as parks, artwork and notable tenants on this tour, which leaves from the Richmond History Center. Reservations must be made in advance by calling 804-649-0711 ext. 301 or visiting www.RichmondHistoryTours.com. The event is $25 for the general public, $20 for History Center members and free for all veterans.
Commonwealth’s Memorial Day Celebration: Attend the state’s official commemoration of the national holiday to honor and remember valiant men and women who have given their lives in service to our country. The celebration is being held on Monday, May 26 at Heilman Amphitheater at 10 a.m.
Memorial Day Wine and Cheese Pairing: Enjoy a more sophisticated Memorial Day with a wine and cheese pairing at Jams River Cellars in Glen Allen. Attendees will learn why they suggest pairing certain cheeses with their award-winning wines. The tasting is for guests 21 and older and costs $10 per person.
Capitol Square: Jefferson, Washington and Spielberg Walking Tour: Join Richmond History Tours for a walking tour that explores the city’s rich past, present and future. Held on Sunday, May 25, the tour will meet at Capitol Square’s 9th and Grace Street gate. The walking tour is $15 for the general public and $5 for History Center members.
