Summer is over, the kids have started back to school, and fall is upon us. If only there was something fun to do in the autumn between now and Halloween. Thank goodness, Richmond, VA, is such a fun place to be because life here is NEVER EVER boring. This weekend, September 17,18, and 19 Field Day of the Past comes to town. It really is like stepping back into the past to see all of the old cars, and demonstrations of work from days gone by. Everything from sawmills to horse pulls will make you nostalgic for yesteryear. Not to mention all the craft exhibits, good food, and rides for the kids.

Roanoke’s Local Flavor

ch_cheshire_lg-300x181.jpg
When you move to a new area, it can take months, even years really to feel “settled”, and to know where the best shopping is, where the best parks are, who the best doctors are, and where the best places to eat are located. It can be frustrating starting all over again. I have lived in Roanoke for three years now, and have been excited to find out that Roanoke has such wonderful local flavor. What I mean is that Roanoke has such a unique atmosphere of down home charm despite being a rather sizeable metropolitan area. When I first moved here, I dreaded starting over again. However, I was very pleasantly surprised at how easy it was for Roanoke to feel like “home”. Living in Roanoke is like slipping on your favorite sweater, it just fits, and it feels warm and inviting. There are two great malls for shopping, and many unique little shops. There are wonderful parks, local attractions like the Mill Mountain Zoo, and many locally owned family restaurants that have some of the best food I have ever eaten.

Location, Location, Location …

Thinking of moving to a new home? Wondering where you should start looking? Well, you should ask yourself some questions first to narrow down your search. After all, the first decision you need to make is Location, Location, Location. Isn’t that the key in real estate? Hopefully, by now you have it narrowed down to what state, and city you want your new home to be in. But that can still leave a huge area for you to search. So to narrow your search, think about these things, and organize them in order of their importance to you.

The Home Builder’s Golden Rule

kinloch_harcourt_lg-300x188.jpg (4)
Would you want someone building a house for you that they wouldn’t live in themselves? If they are building a home for your family, shouldn’t it be good enough for them as well? — of course it should. There is something to be said for the ” Golden rule” — treat others the way you would want to be treated. Did you know that the Golden rule can be applied in the home building industry as well? That is why the Boone Home’s guiding principal is ” To build each home as if it were our own.” At Boone Homes we would never build a home for anyone that we would not live in ourselves. As a matter of fact, the President of our Richmond office, and the President of our Roanoke office both live in … you guessed it, Boone Homes communities, in homes that were built by the same people that will build your new home for you. Many of our employees also live in Boone Homes communities. We know quality when we see it.

Let’s Talk Low Maintenance

Coach_Swood_main1-300x201.jpg
What does the term low maintenance or maintenance free living mean to you? We see it in home builder ads all the time, but what exactly does it cover? Well, we can’t speak to what other builders mean when they say no maintenance living or low maintenance homes, but we can tell you what it means for all of our happy Boone Homes home buyers! The keyword to focus on is freedom, after all that is what we all cherish! Here is the complete list of what our maintenance free homes include.

You better shop around!

You know when you go to the mall and you are looking for one particular item, say a black skirt. You go to every store and you try on the ones you like, look at the prices, then at the end of the day you get the one you liked the best (and your husband rolls his eyes and says that is the first one you tried on). Well, why is homebuying any different than shopping for that skirt? You should shop around. You should visit a lot of different builders and communities and see what each one has to offer. Write down all of the things you like the best about each one.

The Education of Living in Virginia

You may have read in one of our other blogs about the great school systems in Virginia, but did you know that living in Virginia is an education in itself. Where else are you going to see so much living history, and so many places of the past preserved. Just a short drive from Richmond will take you to Colonial Williamsburg where the past comes alive every day with recreations from the revolutionary war period, street theater, and stories of the everyday life of the residents of 18th century Williamsburg.

Making your life a little easier …

WC-20-Bancroft-kitchen5-300x200.jpg (6)
Which is worse cooking or washing dishes? I am sure we will get a variety of answers on that one. I don’t really care for either one myself, but let’s face it, whether we like it or not, they are both things that have to be done. So why not make it as easy on yourself as possible ? With the advanced technology and spaciousness of your new kitchen in your Boone Home, both of those chores will be done more easily and quickly than ever before. Boone Homes’ kitchens offer options like Speed Cook Technology, that can cut cooking times by nearly 50%. If you aren’t interested in cooking faster, but you want to be able to cook more at once, we offer oven towers with one or two ovens in the size that you choose. With an oven tower there is no crouching or bending over to check on your baking — instead everything is at eye level, and easy to transfer from the oven to the counter.

I want Oprah’s Closet!

WC-model-closets06-300x200.jpg
I will never forget the episode of the Oprah Winfrey show that I watched when she gave everyone a “tour” of her closet. WOW! That was all I could say. I sat there and watched in awe. It was amazing. She had a shelf or drawer for every color or fabric choice. Since that episode I have dreamed of Oprah’s closet and admittedly with envy have thought how much I want Oprah’s closet !

Sounds Of Summer

254365_rake_21.jpg
The sounds of summer! How I love thee, let me count the ways: I love thee when I rise in the morning to sound of the mower circulating the yard in a desperate attempt to stay one step ahead of the core aerating and fertilizer we spread in the spring. I love thee in the evening with the tender sound of the irrigation system perpetuating the growth cycle of the grass. I love careful and affectionate squeaky wheel barrow, rake and blunt shovel as they captivate and restrain the rebellious mulch escaping the planting bed’s meet and bounds. I love the sound of the gentle lob shears pruning the rose, lilac and crepe myrtle. I love the warm sloshing of the paint brush as it gathers and disperses the paint of Love on the object needing extensive care.
