Color of the Year: 2018 Home Décor Inspiration

The beginning of the year is frequently cold and gray, which means it’s a great time to add some color and beautiful accent punches to your home. Top paint companies and the Pantone Color Institute have released their chosen Color of the Year, so take some inspiration from these gorgeous shades, whatever your tastes in color may be.

Blue-greens are taking the top spots this year, according to Dunn-Edwards, Sherwin-Williams and Behr, whose colors of 2018 are The Green Hour, Oceanside and In the Moment. The Green Hour is a light blue-green with grayish tints, In the Moment is a pale blue-green and Oceanside is a deep blue-green. The blue-greens, as the most productive and most peaceful colors, are excellent ways to create a beautiful setting for unwinding. The shades “harmonize[s] with other diverse color groups,” said Sherwin-Williams.

Olympic Paint and Glidden’s choices for the Color of the Year go against traditional ideas of what neutrals should be. Black Magic and Deep Onyx, both dark, bold shades with hues of black and purple, seek to contrast the soft grays and pinks that took over 2017 and make individual statements for the homeowners that use them. The colors, though untraditional, make classic, timeless staples at the same time. “The sense of ease and authenticity it brings to a home can’t be denied,” Glidden said in a press release.

Standing out in 2018’s lineup of colors is Caliente by Benjamin Moore. The dark, glowing red hue is the perfect punch to add to your home if you want to warm up grays, whites and neutrals that already live there. Caliente screams confidence and adds a lighthearted feature that makes a room feel like a grand red carpet environment. “Caliente is the signature color of a modern architectural masterpiece…the eye can’t help but follow its bold strokes,” Benjamin Moore said.

Finally, explore your creative, innovative and curious side with Pantone’s Color of the Year, Ultra Violet. The “dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade…communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us towards the future,” Pantone said. The gorgeous deep purple is excellent for use as a strong accent against dark or light neutrals or with other cool colors, like blue, green, or some of the blue-greens highlighted by the other paint companies.

These colors can be added to your home on an accent wall, but if you don’t have the time or the resources to repaint, then consider bringing the colors in with accents. Use throw pillows, blankets, artwork, rugs, curtains, pottery, knick-knacks or anything else that personalizes your home the way you want it.
