When most people think of visiting a zoo, they don’t imagine it being on top of a mountain, but here in Roanoke we have the Mill Mountain Zoo. A fun adventurous place for families to spend the day and see cute adorable animals and it is educational too!
The Mill Mountain Zoo has been a part of Roanoke history since 1952, and still thrives today as one of the small town treasures of the city. The zoo has a number of different species including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. It also has a nature center that has fun activities for children. Last but not least, there is also a train for the little ones to ride around the perimeter of the zoo. Perhaps the best part of Mill Mountain Zoo is that during the hot days of summer, the zoo (being on top of a mountain) is generally 10 degrees cooler than the weather in the valley below.
I took my two adorable little cousins last summer, and we were pleasantly surprised by how cool and inviting the weather was. In addition to the great weather, Mill Mountain also boasts a small park near the zoo, and the famous Roanoke star is just down the road offering a beautiful view of the valley.
After your day’s adventure head on home to your Boone Homes home in one of Roanoke’s premiere new home communities such as Hampshire or The Groves. Both are ideally located in southwest county near some the best schools, parks and shopping in the area. Boone Homes’ Roanoke communities are some of the most family friendly in the area.
